Charles Philipon (19 April 1800 – 25 January 1861). Born in Lyon, he was a French lithographer, caricaturist and journalist. He was the editor of the ''La Caricature'' and of ''Le Charivari'', both satirical political journals. ==Early years== Charles Philipon comes from a small family Lyon bourgeoisie. His father, Étienne Philipon was Hatter and manufacturer and trader of wallpaper. He enthusiastically welcomed the revolution of 1789. According to Pierre Larousse〔''Grand dictionnaire universel du s-XIXe'', Éd. Slatkine, 1982, 17 vol.〕 a relationship existed with Manon Roland, General Philipon and Philipon de la Madelaine . According to incomplete studies at Lyon and Villefranche -sur- Saône, Charles Philipon teaches drawing at the Ecole des Beaux- Arts de Lyon, then in 1819 left his hometown to Paris where he goes for a year in the artist's studio Antoine Gros. In 1821, at the request of his father, who intends to trade, he returned to Lyon and handles for three years drawing factory. If this activity hardly seems to suit him, it will leave traces in the work of designer and publicist . In 1824, in a difficult economic and social context, he participated in the carnival Lyon a festive parade considered seditious ; arrested, he will be acquitted for lack of fillers. He finally left Lyon for Paris where he reunites with his old friends from the workshop Gros. One of them, Charlet, renowned artist, took him under his wing and introduced him to lithography, the technique spread in France in the 1820s . Philipon found employment as a lithographer and artist draws for picture books and fashion magazines, he showed invention using lithography to lead chimney. It binds with the Liberals and satirists, attends workshop Grandville (1827), joins two years later to the creation of the newspaper La Silhouette (1829) which he worked as an editor and designer. Its financial contribution to the company is small. Editorially, its contribution seems to have focused on the organization of the lithographic part, which was the originality of the paper, where the same importance was given to the text and the illustration. If Silhouette had no definite political line, it became more and more offensive approach in July 1830 . It is in this journal that publishes Philipon April 1, 1830 the first political cartoon, " Charles X Jesuit ." He sent his son, Gabriel Aubert, with whom he teamed to create 15 December 1829 the publishing house Aubert, shop prints located in Paris, Veronique Dodat pass, and would become in the following years a "place of breathtaking war" (Ch.
